Complete transcript: Trauma stops thinking
One impact of trauma that we don't really talk about is that we lose our ability to think. We assume that everyone has the ability to think because we have thoughts going through our mind all of the time. But the issue for people who experienced trauma and haven't healed from it is that their mind and body live in the past. So instead of being able to think from our logical mind where we can problem solve and make choices in our best interest, we think from our amygdala, which is the threat detector of our brain. The issue with our amydala is that it sees danger and threats where they don't exist. Because at one time there were danger and threats. This is why someone who experienced trauma will do three things very quickly when they experience stress or conflict. One, become highly reactive. Yell, scream, or try to overpower. Two, completely shut down. Stare off into space, get really quiet, or start using a monotone voice. Three, flee.
