The Spice King Mumbai | Amazing Spice Shop Crawford Market | India

Talk about a kid in a candy shop, now as a Brit, I do not generally get too excited about things, you know fairly reserved and all the stuff….BUT today I have for me being in a dream world.  So most of you know that I am a massive curry fan and being in Mumbai alone is fantastic for me but earlier I went spice shopping, topping up stock for the kitchen back home.

This blew my mind, truly I was excited. I went to a little shop inside the very famous Crawford market, the market itself was built about 150 years ago (completed in 1869) and has over 500 market units selling pretty much everything you can think of. Now when I say 500 units that are inside there are about the same outside as well and they are building a new indoor market to accommodate them.

Ok so I am in India, In Mumbai, buying a few spices, so that gives you a picture of what is what.

So Simon what are you so excited about then, I mean you brought a few spices? Well if you give me a bloody chance I will tell ya.

The quality of the spices is what we are talking about here. The extreme difference shocked me.
I thought ok maybe they will be good but the standard, the aromas, the size the fragrance, the pungent smells, this is what blew my mind.

The power of these spices was just incredible, I mean this place is called the king of spice and that is not BS.

I sat down was given a cup of masala chai and then the owner showed me each spice jar. He opened them and stuck the jars in my face for a good sniff. The green cardamom pods for example were just wonderful, the cinnamon, the star anise, the cumin, my god the cumin this was amazing. It went on and on. Then we got to curry powders, now I am not a great fan of curry powder and always try to use individual spices to create a dish, but these are totally off the scale. What an amazing time I had in this place. Of course, a spent a few quid on supplies and can tell you that I am a very lucky boy.

It just goes to show you that quality is everything, I will be making some fantastic food with this selection.
