The most important ingredient for doing henna body art is good henna. Good henna is fresh and finely sifted. The way you know if your henna is fresh is if it's a very bright green. You can see here, this is a very nice bright green henna. This is probably very fresh. So this is, this is the stuff that you want to use. And finely sifted henna is very important so that you don't have clogs or any problems while you're hennaing. Fresh henna should be six to twelve months old not any older and it's very sensitive to light, heat, and air so it should just be kept in a zip lock bag like I have here and just in a cool drawer or cupboard in the dark. Henna from health food stores or Arab or Indian groceries is often not very fresh. It's usually been sitting on the shelves for a long time and getting stale and sometimes exposed to heat or light. So I don't recommend buying henna from those unless you're just gonna use it on your hair. It definitely should not be used to do henna body art. I think that the best henna available for doing henna body art is available online. I like to buy from henna artists who also sell henna. They use that henna to henna their clients, so it's more likely to be fresh and they'll know exactly when it was harvested and shipped and you're more likely to get really fresh and well sifted henna.
