Following reports that dozens of Palestinians have been killed, demonstrating along the border of the Gaza Strip on Monday, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to show restraint.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said the violence in Gaza only demonstrated the need for a political solution, and only with a two-State solution would we be able to have Israelis and Palestinians living in peace and security.
The Secretary-General appealed to Israel to “calibrate its use of force and minimize the use of live fire”, while calling on Hamas and the leaders of the demonstrations “prevent all violent actions and provocations” that “make the situation also even more serious.”
Guterres was speaking in the Austrian capital Vienna today (14 May), host to one of the UN headquarters offices. Officials of the organizations based at the Vienna International Centre welcomed the Secretary-General on what was his first official visit to Vienna as Secretary-General.
