Wai Lana Yoga : Physical Injury Prevention with Yoga
Yoga has many balancing poses and of course, nearly all poses increase flexibility in some way. Balance and flexibility are essential to prevent falling and to reduce the chance of injury if you do fall.
As you know, injuries from falling are very common. In fact, in any given year, one third of people over 65 suffer a fall. And for those 80 and older, the number goes up to fifty percent.
The key to not falling is good balance. The better your balance, the less chance there is of falling. Balance takes practice—so I usually include at least one balancing pose when I practice.
The key to mobility as we age is flexibility. And having a flexible body means that if you do fall, you’re less likely to suffer a serious injury. A healthy and flexible body is more resilient.
Of course, it is too late to prevent injuries you’ve already sustained. And as the years go by, old injuries can flare up. And in many cases, yoga postures have helped people reduce their aches and pains. Sometimes it’s just a matter of strengthening weak muscles or stretching tight ones, or loosening up joints.
