A straight leg raise with external rotation is a great way to help strengthen your hips, legs and lower back. Watch more Ask Doctor Jo videos featuring full routines for common injuries and syndromes at http://www.askdoctorjo.com

To perform a straight leg raise with external rotation:

1. Lie on your back and bend one leg up. Straighten out the leg you want to exercise, pulling your toes towards you to lock out your knee. Turn your toes and leg outwards.
2. Keeping your knee straight, lift the leg to the height of the other knee, and slowly come back down.
